Of responsibilities and duties

Bunch of us were able to steal an hour of a great man as he humbly agreed to meet us. It was a bright sunday morning and we were talking about the microfinance business that is slipping into oblivion in India. Founder of one of the most respected lender,he said "between rights and responsibilities, it is always rights first that a citizen would choose. The time lag could be huge between the same citizen taking into account his responsibilities."

It is probably for the very same reasons many civil issues linger or as did the opposition against corruption in India. During the meeting I switched off for a few minutes as I pondered upon what had been said. It was not just important in the context of microfinance but has global appeal. Just about everything we do in life is always about "what's in it for me?" We friend were chatting up one day about benefits of being a part of xyz activity. There were not many tangible but there were intangible ones, including personality development. I think as long as one derives intangible benefits, an activity dispensing your responsibilities should be adopted. In the longer run the effects of such work come back to you in terms of monetary/tangible benefits. Its an economist's way of thinking...build Human Capital...eventually higher productivity and higher gains for you

I concur with another school of thinking: "no one gets into an activity thinking without thinking personal growth." There are intangibles, and eventually they matter..
