it occurs to me

it occurs to me, 
if things would have fallen in place,
we would have been living a dream, 
comfortable in care of one another,
fulfilling just every desire,

it occurs to me,
destiny played its part, rest was for us,
exposed to others, the toil ensued,
who knew me better than you,
or so I thought, moving away, squashing all we had, 

it occurs to me,
ifs and thens, buts and alsos,
would not have been many,
excuses as they became, 
making me feel upright, justifying my stand,

it occurs to me,
over a raised toast,
to whats forgetful,
if there weren't us, 
we would have been lameducks,

it occurs to me, 
for it was that,
we carved a niche, 
burnt but not exhausted,
we stand, fighting odds, still.
